A belated post, but nevertheless - Gramatik on Oct 21st was absolutely great. Located in Santa Cruz off the California Coast, the Catalyst is a seedy club/concert venue where students and random townies gather. No drinks allowed on the floor, which makes a lot of sense since everything is served in glass. The couple beer bottles that were dropped ended up broken and had to be cleaned up.
I have a lot of trouble getting into most electronic music because it ends up being repetitive. Well Gramatik is one of the few exceptions that I absolutely love - the funky samples, heavy beats, and some guitar solos make for a great experience. AND he had a live guitarist!!! The party was quite non-stop, and both gramatik and the guitarist put on a great live show. Lights, music, ambiance, everything. Clouded in the haze of pot smoke from neighboring concertgoers, we jumped around and danced our ass off. Good times.
After, we headed to the beach and had a quick dip in the cold ocean before heading back up to Palo Alto (and eventually to Walnut Creek). Even though I got home at 4 am, it was worth it.
